Folks who find a new Kindle under the Christmas tree could have a hard time discovering your book.
You know, the book you struggled and sweated over to get written and proofed and clothed in a flashy cover and formatted for the Kindle.
In a few weeks, thousands of new Kindle owners with open wallets will be chomping at the bit to find reading material.
They wilI try to surf the Amazon Kindle site like I did yesterday. I didn't have a title or author in mind. Just wanted to plunk down a few bucks for a good read.
For category, I punched in mystery. Oops. Up came a listing of 44,036 Kindle books. Not all on one page, either. My eyes started to glaze over by the time I got to page 6 of the listing.
The list was narrowed when I tried the "mystery novels" phrase. This yielded a list of "only" 27,908.
So I shifted gears and searched for romance. Wow! Now I was faced with a list of 86,097. Pages and pages of romance books.
I put some drops in my blurry eyes and tried another genre.
OK, so I tried to spice up the day a little bit. Erotica.
Nope. By the time I got through just a few of the 32,795 choices, the urge would be over.
While resting my eyes, I realized that the longer I put off a decision, the larger those book lists would be. Traditional publishers now realize they are about to miss the digital train and are dumping thousands of back-list books into the Kindle store.
